About the Institute

What's a Custer?

The Custer Institute is a 501(c)(3) New York State educational non-profit. It is the oldest public observatory on Long Island, established in 1927. The Institute operates on public support (proceeds from Saturday night sessions, events, dues, small donations, etc); it is not endowed, nor is it government owned or sponsored.

How does it relate to custerspace?

  • custerspace is located in the basement of the Custer Observatory house.
  • It was started by both new and veteran Custer Institute members.
  • We often work together on projects which benefit all reaches of the Custer Institute - astronomy, arts, humanities and other sciences.
  • We share common goals in our mission.
